Spinning! (I want a sheep)

Recently, my textiles professor Laura Strand taught me how to spin yarn using a drop spindle. I'd been wanting to learn how to spin for ages, so the impromptu lesson was a much appreciated surprise! She even voluntarily lent me her spindle to practice with over break...what a sweetie. Lucky for me, my grandfather has taken up turning wooden pieces (one of a kind and very beautiful) on his lathe in his retirement. I brought the spindle over to his house on Christmas Eve and sweet talked him into crafting me my very own! I am anxiously awaiting its arrival.

Naturally, due to this yarn fever I've recently come down with, I had to exercise EXTREME control over my wool purchasing. I did allow myself to make three lovely purchases over at Sara's Texture Crafts, pictured below.

Norwegian Tops Roving - Natural Grey

Blue Faced Leicester Tops/Roving - Hand dyed Sea Green

Hand Carded Merino Batt felt/spin/weave - Rose Basket Stripe

The spindle pictured in the first picture shows the start of me spinning this last pink batt. My yarn is still in single ply form and a bit (ok, quite a bit) uneven in terms of width. But I will persist!

First hand spun ball of yarn!

And let me just pause to say that the Norwegian grey wool came from this fine animal.

My Father asked me if churning butter was next. Funny, Dad. I can't wait until I can crochet with my own hand spun yarn!
