gathering

I finished this piece this afternoon. It's a contour woodcut with watercolors, about 4 x 7". I'm really excited about the new direction I'm headed in.

there is a time and place for everything

I wanted to keep using tree imagery as a metaphor for family ties and a support system. With this drawing I created a narrative of sorts, showing Germany as a place where life exists, but also using this idea of place as a puzzle piece of something larger and less definable: a lineage, history, a record of time and growth. Germany is physically and mentally part of a support; it is rooted. Simultaneously, it rests atop a cut tree. Death also becomes a part of the conversation, death of the tree, the past, and these roots and the beginning of a new identity flourishing on top, giving the tree new life and forging a symbiotic relationship.

terrain continued

I made this small drawing over the past weekend. Everyone is always blah blah flatten your paper blah blah, but I really like what the water does to the paper. I think the bumps and warping are like a layer of subconscious. They tell the story of how the piece came to be.
