Today I installed a drawing series that I've been working on. I recently was able to read an amazing family story. The story is a first hand account of a family's year long journey and escape from the Russian army as they are invading and liberating Germany during World War II.
As a part of this project, I mapped out the entire journey of the family. This proved to be quite a challenge, as some of the provincial lines have changed and many of the tiny towns have new names or don't appear on modern maps at all. I've used specific imagery and quotes from the story and forged pictorial connections between roots, maps, family trees, vascular systems and the idea of a bloodline, creating a visual companion for the written words.
