I have embarked upon a wood engraving journey. Wood engraving is different from the woodcuts that I have been doing in several ways. The block is a lot smaller and made from end grain wood instead of plank grain wood. This allows for more delicate carving because end grain wood is extremely hard. Instead of gouging down into the wood, I'm merely chipping away at the top, making very tiny, shallow marks. Because the marks are so shallow, I am able to use both sides of the block. This first side was me just practicing making marks with the different kinds of engraving tools.
One exciting this about this engraving is that I am printing it on the Vandercook Press! This is a press designed for publishing tiny prints quickly. You lock your block into place with metal pieces called "furniture" and then lock your paper onto the end of the drum and crank the handle. The press moves your paper across your block and then releases it! I love it.
