Southern Graphics Conference Revisited!

So I'm back in the midwest ready to kick some printmaking ass! The conference was AMAZING; I feel so inspired. Our stay was full of demonstrations, lectures, openings, fairs, free goodies and ungodly amounts of coffee. I'll share with you some of the highlights.

My favorite demo was the Japanese style water-based printing, or Moku Hanga, demo by Katie Baldwin. The first half hour she shared with us a traditional carving sequence that she learned while studying in Japan. The second half hour she discussed ink, paper and printing. I'm really drawn to these traditional methods, and I think I wrote down every single word that came out of her mouth. Can't wait to give it a go myself! Every demonstration during SGC was taped with the intent of being converted into a podcast. When I see that they've been uploaded I'll share the link; so stay tuned!

We also had the chance to visit UArts's Vandercook studio. I don't think I even knew that much type existed. MAJOR DROOL. Visitors got to print their very own Southern Graphics Conference poster with a series of blocks, type and ornaments from three different presses!

The fun didn't stop after conference hours; Drive By Press made an appearance one evening to construct a Tower of Babel made completely out of prints printed by a rocking horse and one very enthusiastic rider.

On Friday we walked for what seemed like miles to an event hosted by Cannonball Press. We were justly rewarded! Cannonball press was printing posters to give away on the coolest press I've ever seen! It was a Golden Clam Shell Press, circa 1890s. And did I mention that this event was ON A SHIP? We also were treated to free soy ice cream, graciously provided by The Franklin Foundation.

Other highlights included an intaglio viscosity roll demo, printing with paper pulp and a talk by Judy Pfaff. If you've never seen her work, please please please visit her website. My jaw was literally on the floor.

Next year, Washington University in St. Louis in hosting SGC...get pumped!
