Studies of Sound

"Studies of Sound"

"1. W"

 "3. U"

 "4. H"

I have continued exploring ideas of sound, and with this current project I took a step away from storytelling and objectively documented sound. I began by writing down all of the letters in the alphabet and spelling out their names phonetically ("Q" became "Kyew"). I then selected from them 15 that I thought sounded the most different from each other.I documented the sound of each letter on a separate piece of paper, speaking their name onto paper with food coloring on my mouth, leaving a mark. After the initial recordings on paper were complete, I went back into each individual study and incorporated the phonetic spelling as a textual element. I also drew in references to anatomical parts involved in communication, such as the lips, tongue, teeth, the roof of the mouth and the inner ear.Once I added the sound waves to them, many took on the form of tiny landscapes!

The final step was to create the audio element to accompany the studies. I recorded myself saying each letter, and placed a number underneath each study that corresponded to the matching audio track.
