Drawing Final

With this piece I have continued working with the vanitas theme that I explored in my last drawing in relation to my semester theme. My concept for the semester started off by looking at some of the materialistic problems that plague society and then turned to look at influences and characteristics of these problems in a birth, death, re-growth manner along with the basic notions of good vs. evil.

Within this composition the skeleton, representing death and an evil influence, is cradling the mirror reflecting the figure. I have rendered the skeleton in full realistic detail to show that he represents a "real", powerful problem. His body language and relationship spatially with the mirror and figure show his pursuasuve influence. The skeleton itself stands for the realistic conveniences of society and how often times it is more comfortable for us to indulge in those activities than to do the more socially responsible act. The scene that holds the figure is a simple line drawing, showing how easily we can be manipulated and swayed. The reflection of the skeleton within the smaller mirror is tonally rendered to again show his power and influence.

The second mirror on the left shows the figure's leg. In this panel the leg is tonal and the figure is not even reflected at all. This panel holds an alternative meaning, one where the figure becomes strong, in control, and resistant to the influence of the skeleton and the bombardment of the materialistic impulses that it represents.
